Nice article. Yes, I truly believe that the gift of monasticism is to help one find their own true self...and that is a very difficult journey.

By the way, "Into Great Silence" , the film about the Carthusian monks has been released in theatres. They tell me that it will be available on DVD in April 2007.

Monk?

I have been going to the Abbey of the Genesee for over 20 years and I have a strong friendship with Father Jerome. I am looking forward to your Posts and checking the archives.

God bless.

In your post, you said mentioned how that the community is the soil from which the monk's spiritual growth will florish.

I live near Lancaster, PA. I was truly struck today by an article on CNN in which the grandfather -- standing near the dead body of his murdered 13 year-old Amish granddaughter talked about the need for forgiveness and prayer.(The young Amish girl was killed execution-style by a local man), I suspect that the strong faith and prayer life of the Amish community has given them strength through this great tragedy. It is the community that helped provide spiritual strength.

(I tend to wonder who many of us have those -- very much needed -- strong faith communities to support us when we are not strong enough to support ourselves.)

Thank you Michael for sharing with us this article. I am writing from Spain, although I am from the Philippines, and I am now a postulant at the Monasterio de Santa Maria de La Oliva (OCSO) up in the north of Spain. Presently, I am still in Madrid and trying to finish secular things which for me seems to be an uphill challenge especially dealing with family and financial worries. But thanks to your article I am again on the right track and it is good to be reminded that we have a God who is forgiving and who is always there go guide us.

good comment. my tagline on outgoing emails is a quote from merton: "what i do is live. how i pray is breathe." the spiritual life is life itself ... and how we learn to love God and each other.

Great meditation from St. Bernard of Clairvaux. "My advise to you my friends, is to turn aside occasionally from troubled and anxious pondering on the paths you may be treading, and to travel on smoother ways where the gifts of God are quietly savored."

Re design, I preferred the previous header image, layman with pack on his back in the city/at the subway. I think the image more perfectly reflected the feel of your site. The image was also very consonant with this idea of St. Bernard. I agree that contemplative houses offer a wonderful opportunity to explore God's peace, but that peace can be found in the world, within, if one takes time to quiet and listen.

Condolences on the loss of Juni.
